Breaking: Fire outbreak in Onitsha as petrol tanker falls, spills content

Published

on

A fire broke out at Nkwelle Ezunaka, near Onitsha, on Saturday when a petrol tanker carrying petroleum products fell into a ditch.

A source said the tanker driver lost control and fell into a ditch, spilling its content, resulting in a massive outbreak of fire in the area.

Residents of the area reportedly fled their homes for fear of being engulfed in the flame.

Our correspondent gathered that firefighters, who were deployed to the area, were chased back by an irate mob, who protested their arrival delay, attacking them with stones and other dangerous weapons.

The firefighters, who feared for their lives, made a U-turn and left the area for fear of their equipment being destroyed too.

Meanwhile, the fire chief, Anambra State Fire Service, Mr Martin Agbili, has lamented the poor attitude of some members of the society in appreciating the work of firefighters.

Agbili, while reacting to the attack on his men, said: “It is very unfortunate for the ugly actions of people towards firefighters and fire service.

“My men and the first fire trucks got to the fire scene of T-junction Nkwelle and people start throwing stones at them. People should understand that fire service is only coming to render help when there is fire outbreak and not the cause of the fire.”

He, however, said that police operatives and members of the Nkwelle Ezunaka community vigilante were able to render assistance that helped the firefighters to return and do their job.

He added that two persons, who were involved in pelting his men had been arrested, while others have fled.

“Having engaged the Nigeria Police Force and the vigilante, two persons among those that threw stones on my men have been arrested, and some identified ones are still on the run.

“The team of Nigeria Police and Local Vigilante led my men back to the fire scene. Our Firefighters and fire trucks are back to the fire scene again to complete the fire fighting operation, and finally the fire has been controlled,” he said.

Breaking: Arsenal suffer Thomas Partey injury worry ahead of crucial Leeds United clash

Published

on

Thomas Partey will fly back to Arsenal having missed Ghana’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Angola on Monday due to injury.

Ghana manager Chris Houghton confirmed Partey, who remained an unused substitute during the 1-1 draw, was deemed too much of a risk to play during his post-match press conference.

“Thomas has some small injury issues,” Houghton said. “We felt it was too big a risk to start him.”

Arsenal are expecting Partey back at London Colney on Tuesday where they will assess the midfielder, who was accompanied to Ghana by Gunners physio Simon Murphy, ahead of this weekend’s home game with Leeds.

The former Atletico Madrid star felt something in his right leg during a training session with his country on Sunday. Sources close to the player insist it is not a hamstring issue and believe he should be fine for Saturday’s game at Emirates Stadium.

Houghton is understood to have taken the decision to leave Partey out on his own. There was no outside pressure from Arsenal, despite the presence of Murphy.

The Gunners medical team will make a decision later in the week on whether the 29-year-old can feature against Leeds. Arsenal travel to Liverpool the following weekend for a huge game at Anfield as they chase their first Premier League title since 2004.

Should Partey miss out this Saturday, Jorginho would most likely be the man to come in and replace him in midfield.

An Ikeja High Court has sentenced a domestic staff, Joseph Ogbu, to death by hanging for killing his employer, an 89-year-old woman, Ajoke John and her daughter, Oreoluwa in Lagos State.

NAN reports that Justice Modupe Nicole-Clay held on Monday that the prosecution had sufficiently proven the 3-count charge bordering on murder and armed robbery against the convict.

Nicole-Clay held today that the defendant confessed to the crime as he self-confessed living with the deceased and he was the only witness of the incident.

Nicole-Clay said, “He killed Adejoke by strangling her and Oreoluwa by stabbing her to death as defence didn’t raise objection to the admissibility of the confessional statement, there’s no doubt that the defendant confessed to the crimes.

“The defendant couldn’t give an explanation as to what he was doing with all the stolen items he was found with at about 2 am on the date he was arrested.

“This court has found Joseph Ogbu guilty of these heinous crimes and you’re hereby sentenced to death by hanging. May God have mercy on your soul.”

The convict, while gesticulating, begged the court for mercy.
