Breaking: Ed Sheeran Cleared of Copyright Infringement in High-Stakes 'Let's Get It On' Lawsuit

A jury has decided that Ed Sheeran did not unlawfully copy Marvin Gaye’s classic song “Let’s Get It On” in his 2014 hit “Thinking Out Loud”.

The decision is a relief to the British pop star who expressed his gratitude to the jury for protecting the creative process for songwriters in the US and around the world. He hugged his attorneys after the verdict was read in Manhattan federal court.

The lawsuit was brought by heirs of Ed Townsend, the writer of “Let’s Get It On”, who claimed that Sheeran, his label Warner Music Group, and his music publisher Sony Music Publishing infringed their copyright interest in the Gaye song.

The plaintiffs were seeking a share of the profits from “Thinking Out Loud”, arguing that the song copied the “heart” of Gaye’s song including its melody, harmony, and rhythm.

However, the jury ruled that Townsend’s heirs had not proven their case and that the similarities between the songs involved basic musical “building blocks” that cannot be copyrighted. Sheeran, who denied the copyright infringement claims, said outside the courthouse that he was “just a guy with a guitar who loves writing music for people to enjoy” and that he would not allow himself to be a “piggy bank for anyone to shake”. The verdict came after six days of trial and less than three hours of jury deliberations.
