PDP Govs, NWC, BoT, Others Protest as Afenifere divided over Tinubu’s victory

Governors who are members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the National Working Committee (NWC), Board of Trustees (BoT), National Executive Committee (NEC) and supporters of the leading opposition party have resolved to stage a peaceful protest over the outcome of the February 25, presidential and National Assembly elections.

The protest is to be led by the party’s National Chairman, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, to the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja today.

The PDP had called for the cancellation of the elections, alleging irregularities, but INEC announced the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as the winner of the presidential poll.

Candidate of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar, who came second according to the results announced by INEC, is however challenging the outcome of the poll in court.

According to an invitation for the protest signed by the Director of Administration on behalf of the Director General of the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation and Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, former senate presidents, David Mark and Bukola Saraki; People Living With Disabilities (PLWDs), campaign council members and the vice presidential candidate of the party, Ifeanyi Okowa, will be part of the protest.

Afenifere divided over Tinubu’s victory

Meanwhile, the announcement of Tinubu as president-elect has further divided the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere.

The Publicity Secretary of the group, Comrade Jare Ajayi, had issued a statement on Friday congratulating Tinubu on his victory.

The statement from Ajayi came despite the endorsement of the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr Peter Obi, by Afenifere’s leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo.

Adebanjo, in a chat with Daily Trust yesterday, said, “There is no Afenifere that congratulated Tinubu.”

Also speaking with Daily Trust yesterday, a chieftain of Afenifere and former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Chief (Mrs) Bucknor Akerele, said, “He has no authority whatsoever to make such a statement because we are supporting Obi, and Obi has already gone to court. So, how can we be congratulating Bola Tinubu?”

However, Pa Reuben Fasoranti has also congratulated Tinubu on his victory in the just concluded presidential election and advised the president-elect to avoid the mistakes made by his predecessors by ensuring that every ethnic group was carried along under his administration.

The Chairman of Afenifere Renewal Group, Hon Wale Oshun, who spoke with Daily Trust yesterday, also hailed Tinubu for his victory, saying his emergence showed that he was widely accepted across the country.

Breaking: Arsenal suffer Thomas Partey injury worry ahead of crucial Leeds United clash

Published

Thomas Partey will fly back to Arsenal having missed Ghana’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Angola on Monday due to injury.

Ghana manager Chris Houghton confirmed Partey, who remained an unused substitute during the 1-1 draw, was deemed too much of a risk to play during his post-match press conference.

“Thomas has some small injury issues,” Houghton said. “We felt it was too big a risk to start him.”

Arsenal are expecting Partey back at London Colney on Tuesday where they will assess the midfielder, who was accompanied to Ghana by Gunners physio Simon Murphy, ahead of this weekend’s home game with Leeds.

The former Atletico Madrid star felt something in his right leg during a training session with his country on Sunday. Sources close to the player insist it is not a hamstring issue and believe he should be fine for Saturday’s game at Emirates Stadium.

Houghton is understood to have taken the decision to leave Partey out on his own. There was no outside pressure from Arsenal, despite the presence of Murphy.

The Gunners medical team will make a decision later in the week on whether the 29-year-old can feature against Leeds. Arsenal travel to Liverpool the following weekend for a huge game at Anfield as they chase their first Premier League title since 2004.

Should Partey miss out this Saturday, Jorginho would most likely be the man to come in and replace him in midfield.

An Ikeja High Court has sentenced a domestic staff, Joseph Ogbu, to death by hanging for killing his employer, an 89-year-old woman, Ajoke John and her daughter, Oreoluwa in Lagos State.

NAN reports that Justice Modupe Nicole-Clay held on Monday that the prosecution had sufficiently proven the 3-count charge bordering on murder and armed robbery against the convict.

Nicole-Clay held today that the defendant confessed to the crime as he self-confessed living with the deceased and he was the only witness of the incident.

Nicole-Clay said, “He killed Adejoke by strangling her and Oreoluwa by stabbing her to death as defence didn’t raise objection to the admissibility of the confessional statement, there’s no doubt that the defendant confessed to the crimes.

“The defendant couldn’t give an explanation as to what he was doing with all the stolen items he was found with at about 2 am on the date he was arrested.

“This court has found Joseph Ogbu guilty of these heinous crimes and you’re hereby sentenced to death by hanging. May God have mercy on your soul.”

The convict, while gesticulating, begged the court for mercy.

He said in pidgin English, “the mama no die for my presence. I beg for mercy.”
